Back in early December I had a bunch of our local Brentwood runs asking me to setup a trail race for them to cut there teeth on. So all 14 of us signed up for the Crystal Springs event. Every one was so excited the follow weeks leading up to the race when disasted struck, well for me at least. At our local annual motocross race dubbed the Hangover Marathon on newyears day I had an astounding crash leaving me with a fractured scapula and a torn rotator cuff in my shoulder after trying several methods to affix my arm to my body to prevent the shoulder from moving while running(this included duct tape) I came to the conclusion that I wasn't going to be running the race. Since I was the one who convinced the majority of our group to go I decided I got volunteer at an aid station and support them and everyone else instead.
Saturday morning everyone met for carpooling to the race and you could feel the anticipation in the air. We got to huddard park at 7:30 with almost no traffic and parking was a breeze. Everyone checked in or signed up for there respective distance while I checked in with Wendell the R.D. as well as Dave Sanders and Lynnard Phipps the head honcho at the Kings Mountain Aid station I'd be working. We waited as long as we could for the other Jason and Gary but decided they could catch up later. As we drove back out the park entrance we saw the line of cars to gain entry was farther then we could see with only 20mins till the start o the first race . Lynnard, Dave, and I hopped out of the car to give poor Larry who was being overwhelmed with cars a hand. After 20 mins we had the line of cars completely extinguished and where back on the road to the Aid station. On our way up we found a runner on the road with a green volunteer hat do we asked "are you Jason or Gary by chance" he replied "yeah I'm Jason" cool hop on in. When we arrived at the aid station we Gary was already there setting up . We had the aid station setup with plenty of time to spare before the first runner came flying through. Once the runners started coming in it never stopped and time seaming to just fly by. It was cool being able to see the race through to eyes of the aid station helpers for a change. I got to see all my friends run through and I was able to hang out till about 12:45 when Matt Ware our Brentwood groups only 50k entrant came rolling through on his way to the final stretch looking great for his first ultramarathon. I caught a ride back down to the finish with a guy from the UK we met up there earlier who missed the start of the after getting lost using his rental cars nav and ended up at our aid station instead. I got back in time to see Matt finish his first 50k in 4hours 50 mins. Everyone in our group was very happy with CTR and all the volunteers that showed up to help out, and I'm sure this won't be the last time we get the Brentwood group together for a day trip to a CTR event.
Thanks again ;D ;D ;D
